Why I Wrote This
Teachers often tell me:
"I know my ELLs need support... I just don't know where to start."
Supporting multilingual learners/ELLs can feel overwhelming, especially when you're balancing the needs of an entire class. It's easy to think that effective EAL support is something only specialists can provide.
But it doesn't have to be that way.
This article shares one complete intervention journey from my own classroom, showing how purposeful language scaffolding helped learners progress from simple sentence frames to independently describing and explaining complex scientific ideas.
Rather than focusing on a single activity or worksheet, the article explores how language support can be intentionally planned across an entire unit of learning.
